Beyond God Live in Diest

Het vroeger legendarische muziekcafé The Borderline in Diest is al meer dan een jaar omgevormd tot de rock- en metalclub Moonlight Music Hall.

Gisterenavond stonden daar twee metal bands op de affiche die één ding gemeen hadden: ze waren beide "female fronted", zoals dat heet in het jargon.

Tweede groep op de affiche was Beyond God uit Nederland, een symfonische metal band die je enigzins kan vergelijken met Within Temptation. Mooie zang, melodieuze songs en een dosis theatraal spektakel (niet negatief bedoeld).

Eind november komt hun eerste CD op de markt, en daaruit hebben zij een selectie gespeeld in Diest.

Eerste groep op de affiche was Splendidula.

Het is niet makkelijk om deze groep in een hokje te plaatsen. Als je puur kijkt naar de samenstelling en de sfeer, zou je kunnen zeggen dat ze Gothic Metal brengen. Maar de variatie in de nummers dekt deze lading niet volledig. Het gebruik van het brede stembereik van zangeres Kristien Cools en het stevige drumwerk van Patrick Vanderhenst tillen deze groep een niveau hoger.

Mijn favoriete stukjes waren Dollywood, Overshadow en Too Close to Me.

Hinterland: Scandinavian crime in Aberystwyth, Wales

I've started watching a new Welsh crime series called "Hinterland" (Welsh title: Y Gwyll, which means "The Dusk"). Set in the seaside town of Aberystwyth, it centers around DCI Tom Matthias trying to solve crime in the Ceredigion region.

Strangely enough, the series exists in an English-spoken and a Welsh-spoken version, and even stranger, the Flemish television channel Canvas bought the Welsh version. I love it, such a wonderful language.

The series is beautifully shot, using long tracking shots like some of the better Danish and Swedish series. Looking forward to more episodes.

Mork is no longer

Sad news from Tiburon, California. The acclaimed actor and stand-up comedian Robert Williams died on August 11, 2014 from an apparent suicide attempt.

Robin Williams first made an impression on the Happy Days show as alien "Mork" and later got his own TV show. It was already apparant then that Williams was too big for the small screen.

After his first movies (Popeye and The World According to Garp) he went on to star in major movies, both receiving critical acclaim and public recognition.

Among his most successful movies, we include Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting and One Hour Photo

Monty Python Live at the O2

Tonight at 20:00 hours CET, the five remaining members of Monty Python's Flying Circus will appear for a final reunion at the London O2 Arena.

All over the world, this event will be live broadcasted on the big screen in numerous cinemas. I will attend the screening in the Brussels Kinepolis, hoping to feel a bit of the same magic I felt when I watched them for the first time (I discovered them through Life of Brian).

I already know John Cleese won't be performing his silly walk (due to a hip replacement) but I still hope Terry Jones's wife's a go-er (nudge nudge, know what I mean?)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
