Blindness

Blindness

One of the best movies ever was made by Fernanco Meirelles : Cidade de Deus. He also made the gripping Constant Gardner, and now he has made an American movie called Blindness. The less you know about the story, the better, as it gets its strength from not 'seeing' what there is.

The movie is based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, but you would not know it from watching the movie as it uses great cinematography to show us the total decay of a country hit by an epidemic. The actors are all good, the atmosphere is chilling and at certain moments really traumatic. Some people will like the ending, others not, but it is a movie that you will probably not forget immediately after leaving the theatre.

Quote from Blindness:

Doctor's Wife: The only thing more terrifying than blindness is being the only one who can see.

A city is ravaged by an epidemic of instant "white blindness". Those first afflicted are quarantined by the authorities in an abandoned mental hospital where the newly created "society of the blind" quickly breaks down. Criminals and the physically powerful prey upon the weak, hording the meager food rations and committing horrific acts
